Prevent Trachoma

School staff can access training and resources to understand how to prevent trachoma infections.

Request Professional Learning

Principals can request professional learning for your staff to find out about:

  • what trachoma is
  • the causes, and how it can be prevented in schools
  • research and statistics on the condition
  • the importance of hygiene practices in early childhood
  • the impact on student learning, educational outcomes, and long-term vision loss
  • community engagement and further training for Aboriginal and Islander education officers (AIEOs)
  • using relevant information in plan, act and assess cycles

Support students with Otitis Media and Conductive Hearing Loss

School staff can access training and resources to support students with conductive hearing loss and Otitis Media.

Request Professional Learning

Principals can request professional learning for your staff to find out:

  • what otitis media and conductive hearing loss is
  • how you can raise awareness and understanding in your school community
  • research and statistics on the conditions
  • the causes and indicators, and how it can be prevented in schools
  • the impact on student learning and educational outcomes, particularly on students’ speech, language and literacy skills
  • what classroom adjustments you can make to enable student engagement and learning.

Develop Healthy ear-eye strategic plans

Principals may request advice to develop healthy ear-eye strategic plans for their school that:

  • are tailored to the local school context
  • are culturally safe
  • help prevent and reduce the impact of Otitis Media, conductive hearing loss and trachoma.

Strategies in your plans can include:

  • professional learning
  • monitoring student hearing and referring students for hearing assessments
  • screening reports and retaining data
  • supporting English as an additional language or dialect students with hearing loss
  • budgeting for, and installing, classroom sound-field-systems
  • whole-school health and hygiene initiatives, resourcing, and communication
  • school self-assessments
  • links to the curriculum
  • student voice and leadership
  • community voice and involvement, community leaders and mentor heroes
  • possible roles, responsibilities, and further training for Aboriginal and Islander education officers (AIEOs)
  • using relevant data in plan, act and assess cycles.

Principals, school networks and regional services staff can request support to develop healthy ear-eye strategic plans.
