SSEN: S considers diagnostic information, a holistic view of the functional impact of the condition, and individual developmental needs when considering referrals for services.
Deaf Education Program
Early Childhood Services (0-K)
The criteria for specialist educational programs are:
- Diagnostic information from an audiologist
- Permanent or long-term hearing loss with a 4-frequency average loss of 25dB or greater.
Visiting Teacher Services (PP-Year 12)
The criteria for specialist educational programs are:
- Diagnostic information from an audiologist
- Permanent or long-term hearing loss with a 4-frequency average loss of 30dB or greater in the better ear.
Where the above criteria are not met, educators may be directed to self-service resources or offered a targeted consultancy service if there is demonstrated evidence of individual need and functional challenge, within an educational environment, because of mild, temporary, or unilateral hearing loss.
Vision Education Program
Early Childhood Services (0-K)
The criteria for specialist intensive teaching and learning programs are:
- Diagnostic information from an ophthalmologist or optometrist,
- A visual acuity of 6/18 or less (in the better eye after correction), and/or
- A constricted visual field of 20 degrees or less, or
- Mild vision impairment associated with a degenerative vision condition.
Visiting Teacher Services (PP-Year 12)
The criteria for specialist educational programs are:
- Diagnostic information from an ophthalmologist or optometrist,
- A visual acuity of 6/18 or less (in the better eye after correction), and/or
- A constricted visual field of 20 degrees or less, or
- Mild vision impairment associated with a degenerative vision condition.
Where the above criteria are not met, educators may be directed to self-service resources or offered a targeted consultancy service if there is demonstrated evidence of individual need and functional challenge, within an educational environment, because of monocular vision or mild vision loss.
As SSEN: S educational programs and services are government funded, they will be provided at no cost to the school, parents, or guardians of eligible students with hearing loss, vision impairment or dual sensory loss.
